Korakuen Garden,Okayama | Polly & Wada

Shooting a wedding in Okayama, Japan last year(2025) was such an incredible experience—getting the chance to document a wedding in Japan is definitely no easy feat! I’ve known the bride, Baoli, for over ten years. I missed her first wedding, but I made sure I was there for her second! (We always love joking about this.)

This time around, I shot the entire wedding solo. Compared to weddings in Taiwan, a Japanese wedding is relatively streamlined, but there are still plenty of subtle details and etiquette to keep in mind—especially since this was my first time navigating Japanese wedding customs.

Along with my main Sony setup, I brought along the Hasselblad X2D and the 35–100mm lens. When they were talking in the video about that “super expensive camera,” yep, that was the one!

Even though it was an intimate gathering of around 50 to 60 guests, the part that left the deepest impression on me was during the reception dinner. Baoli and her Taiwanese friends and family brought such vibrant energy and lively gestures that the Japanese guests were completely overwhelmed (and amused!) by genuine Taiwanese warmth and enthusiasm. Language barriers were effortlessly broken down with a mix of English and body language, and everyone had an absolute blast connecting with one another.

It was such a fun and memorable wedding. A huge thank you to Baoli and “Wagyu Guy” (the groom’s nickname) for sending this clip over!

I really hope to visit them in Okayama again soon!
